National Zoological Park
Aquatics Exhibit

Washington, DC
1999

DDA’s schematic design for the proposed Aquatics Exhibit at the National Zoo transforms a disjointed threeacre site with a string of four small concrete lined ponds into a unified watery landscape. A trail skirts the boggy edges of the consolidated naturalized ponds, punctuated by eight interpretive stations about animal adaptation, watersheds, wetlands and related topics along the way. Special features include an underwater viewing station and water playground. Other proposed exhibit area improvements include trail linkages and a dining terrace overlook for the Mane Restaurant. Implementation of this $5.2 million project awaits Congressional and private sector funding.
