Forest Park Zoo
Master Plan

Springfield, Massachusetts
2001-2002

DDA’s Master Plan for the Zoo in Forest Park envisions comprehensive improvements to a 6 acre municipal Zoo, including new and expanded facilities for visitors and staff, as well as major redevelopment of its hitherto disorganized animal exhibits. The Plan ’s Barnyards, “Back yards and Beyond” theme provides interpretive foci for new state of the art exhibits of domesticated, native New England and exotic species. The “Barnyard” features a barn, pens, coop, field, green, “farmhouse” and butterfly garden. The “Barnyard”, out the farmhouse’s back door, features a boardwalk, wetland lab and walk in dens. The “Beyond”, approached via a walk through aviary, features an Austrailian grassland, deer park and rainforest pavilion. A parade of animal sculptures, envisioned between the parking lot and entry, will entice visitors to a new experience at the Zoo in Forest Park. Shown here is an overview of the proposed zoo, also featuring new and renovated buildings envisioned by Kuhn Riddle Architects.
