Scusset Beach State Reservation
Master Plan

Sandwich/Bourne, Massachusetts
2001-2002

Scusset Beach State Reservation is a 380 acre recreational area at the eastern end of the Cape Cod Canal, managed by the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Management. The Master Plan for this site strikes a new balance between natural resource conservation and recreation, based on an assessment of environmental sensitivities, existing use patterns and opportunities. The Plan, by DDA in partnership with Carr Lynch + Sandell Inc. and Normandeau Associates, proposes the preservation of critical habitats, restoration of degraded primary dunes and a saltwater marsh. For recreation, the Plan envisions wildlife corridors/buffer zones between the primary activity areas (Beach-side, Canal-side and Fish Pier Place), each with new or improved facilities: beach house, park house, camping sites, interpretive center and playgrounds. New bicycle and interpretive trails will link these facilities with special scenic and historic resources, while new traffic patterns and added parking reduce the impact of vehicles.
