Aboriginal Heritage Garden
Park Master Plan

Eel River Bar, New Brunswick, Canada
1995-1997

The native Mic Mac peoples of eastern Canada and northern Maine have a rich heritage of harmony with their environment and hospitality to others. The U.S. Smithsonian Institution and Canadian Museum of Nature are jointly sponsoring development of this Mic Mac heritage park to educate visitors about such heritage with emphasis on the medicinal use of plants. DDA’s schematic design for its 110-acre bay-side site embodies sustainable design principles and updated forms of traditional Mic Mac material culture. The plan features a visitor center, trails and parking for 500 vehicles, all sited for ideal solar orientation and conservation of medicinal plant locations. Special landscape features are the Circle Clearing, birch grove, a river way, Turtle Island and a wigwam settlement.
