DDA’s master plan for Winston Salem’s largest, 556 unit, public housing complex was part of a winning Hope VI application to HUD. Aiming for a safer, greener, more diversified and convenient environment for residents, the Plan called for reduction of population density through demolition, along with the addition of new housing types: single family homes and duplexes. Other Plan features include: new roadways and walkways to improve linkages; a brook-side Greenway to provide both linkages and recreation; a reconstructed Recreation Center; and a new centrally located Community Center. The illustrative drawing shown here is of the site’s eastern half, including typical housing types and the aforementioned features. The application was awarded $27,000,000.
