Union College
Circulation, Parking and Open Space Study

Schenectady, New York
1998

Union College’s neo-classic campus core was laid out in the formative years of the American republic. DDA’s study of this campus core updates the original neo-classical plan in light of the perennial problem of parking and a renewed commitment to pedestrian friendly open space. Existing conditions analyses and case studies undertaken during the course of this study identified problems and opportunities. Ensuing proposals include: the conversion of four roadways to promenades, walkway additions, numerous adjustments to parking facilities throughout the campus, a campus pond and reclamation of former College land to create a mixed used/residential square. The illustrative plan drawing shown here highlights areas of proposed change with color. Most colorful are two areas slated for dramatic changes: the creation of a pond within a naturalized ravine north of the campus core; and development of three mixed use/residential blocks along the western edge to weave them back into the campus core.
