University of Massachusetts
Campus Pond Landscape

Amherst, Massachusetts
1994-1996

The Campus Pond and its surroundings constitute the primary open space and historic core of the University of Massachusetts Amherst. DDA’s design for this 20 acre site was developed through an intesive assessment and participatory planning process. Its pond improvement strategies, in consultation with New England Environmental Inc., include dredging, sediment control, reconfiguration, island restoration and bank stabilitation. A new bridge is one among its many improvements for pedestrians. Other features will create places in lieu of undefined open space: ceremonial Oval Lawn fronting the Library and Student Union; Memorial Terrace overlooking the Pond from Alumni Hall; a concert lawn and stage and a series of small sitting terraces. Approved by the University Chancellor and Trustees and budgeted for $5.6 million in 1995, this project awaits capital campaign funding.
