Yokun Brook Wetland Mitigation
Massachusetts Highway Department

Lenox, Massachusetts
1998

The Yokun Brook Wetland Mitigation Area is a 2 acre, ecologically sensitive site located along the well-traveled junction of Routes 7 and 20 in Lenox, Massachusetts. DDA worked closely with New England Environmental Consultants and MassHighway to develop an ecologically sound and aesthetically pleasing planting scheme for this highly visible roadside site. Since the location had been identified as an endangered species habitat, DDA developed a planting scheme that not only met specific requirements for vegetation, but also preserved and enhanced a key viewshed. The planting design features a pond with water lilies and native aquatic species, a wetland meadow adorned with naturalized wildflowers and indigenous shrub and tree species, and an upland island planted with drought tolerant woody plant material.
