Cohasset Common
Landscape Preservation, Master Plan

Cohasset, Massachusetts
2002

The Cohasset Common was created by a 1670 subdivision plan, which set aside a five acre parcel along the shore road between Hingham and Scituate, Massachusetts. Over three hundred years later, the expanse and simplicity of this multi-use community green and the complementary beauty of its neighboring civic and residential buildings make the Cohasset Common one of the oldest and most pristine examples of its kind in New England. The CLS/ DDA Partnership’s Master Plan for the Common traces its historic development, analyzes its existing conditions and proposes improvements to preserve historic integrity and enhance usage. The key proposals focused on roadways and parking as ways to unify divided halves, enlarge the green, reintegrate northern and southern fragments, bury overhead wires and eliminate intrusive parking.
