Marked by rolling topography and distinctive terrace walls on both sides of Route 2, Hillside Cemetery in North Adams contains the graves of the City ’s founders, industrialists and laborers alike. The Cemetery has deteriorated since the days of its nineteenth century elegance; gravestones and monuments lie overturned, entrances are difficult to access and edges are crowded by residential and industrial development. DDA and its consultants prepared National Register nomination documents, a Landscape Preservation and Management Plan and a GIS database for cemetery records. The Plan includes a history of the Cemetery’s development, an assessment of its historical resources and phased, long term recommendations to preserve, sustain and enhance this historic treasure.
